Build vertical and square countdown overlays for social challenges, promotions, tutorials, and short-form video. This guide focuses on a repeatable workflow and the settings that matter most in real projects.
Timers create visible pacing
Short-form video moves quickly, and a countdown tells viewers exactly how long a challenge, reveal, comparison, or offer segment will last. It can also increase clarity in tutorials where a process needs a fixed wait time.
Use the native aspect ratio
For most vertical platforms, 1080×1920 is the useful starting point. Square 1080×1080 is still valuable for mixed social publishing. Designing the timer at the final aspect ratio avoids awkward scaling and keeps the digits in a predictable position.
Protect the interface safe areas
Social apps place captions, profile elements, buttons, and navigation over the video. Keep the timer away from the extreme bottom and right edges, and test the finished composition on a phone before publishing.
Transparent overlays give editing freedom
A transparent timer can be moved, resized, and layered over the main footage. This is usually better than baking a solid background into the timer unless the timer itself is intended to fill the screen.
Short durations work best
Three, five, ten, thirty, and sixty-second countdowns often fit short-form storytelling better than multi-minute clocks. For an elapsed-time challenge, count-up mode can make the result feel more like a stopwatch.
Build the timer in TimerCountUp
Open the TimerCountUp generator and configure the timer for the project before recording. The preview lets you verify the mode, duration, format, style, color, background, animation, resolution, and frame rate before creating the video. Because the recording is generated in the browser, the workflow is designed for quick one-off assets as well as reusable timer libraries.
What to check before publishing
Watch the finished timer at the actual size viewers will see. Confirm that the first and last seconds behave as expected, the digits remain readable over the real background, and the file starts exactly where the edit or scene needs it. If the timer will be reused, keep the original WebM and note the settings so the same visual can be regenerated at another duration.
